Steve opened up the contacts and found Biff’s number, but it wasn't attached to Biff's name. Instead, the name associated with that phone number was someone named Buffy. Steve's stomach turned in a knot, thinking about what that meant. Regardless, he called the number anyway.
======
Biff was about to call Sarah, but he just couldn't find his phone. Then, suddenly, he heard a ringtone that sounded just like Sarah's phone. Following the sound, he found it. Yeah, it looked just like Sarah's, but he had this sinking feeling that, just like everything else around here, it belonged to him and not his girlfriend. Looking at the caller ID, he saw he was getting a phone call from someone named Steph. Did he know someone by that name?
He thought about ignoring the call, but then he thought that this Steph girl could probably tell him what was going on. He answered the phone call.
"Hello? Who is this?" Biff asked.
"Steph. Who's this?" the girl on the other end asked.
"Are you responsible for doing this to me?" Biff insinuated.
"Doing what?" Steph asked.
"Replacing all my stuff with my girlfriend's stuff," Biff said. "If you had anything to do with this ... I don't care if you're a chick. When I find you ..."
"A what?" the girl asked, sounding confused. Biff heard a guy's voice in the background of the call, saying "Any luck, Steph? What's Buffy telling you?"
Who was Buffy? Now it was Biff who was confused.
"You know, maybe this was a bad idea," Steph said, then hung up.
"Hey, wait," Biff said, but the call was already disconnected. "Who was that chick?"

Just earlier, in Steve's bedroom ...
"It's ringing," Steve told Tiffany.
"Hello? Who is this?" came the voice of a girl, on the other end of the call. This was definitely not Biff.
"Steve. Who's this?"
"Are you responsible for doing this to me?" the girl insinuated.
"Doing what?" Steve asked.
"Replacing all my stuff with my girlfriend's stuff," the girl said. "If you had anything to do with this ... I don't care if you're a chick. When I find you ..."
"A what?" Steve asked, confused. How could anyone mistake him for a girl? He didn't even sound like one.
"Any luck, Steve? What's Biff telling you?"
"You know, maybe this was a bad idea," Steve said, then hung up. He turned towards his girlfriend. "It wasn't Biff. It was some chick."
"Maybe you should try someone else from your contact list," Tiffany said.
"Or you could try your phone this time," he suggested.

It seemed that while the people who had switched with each other could recognize themselves and each other as their normal selves (despite their obvious gender role changes), they couldn't with other people. So Biff would see and hear Steve as a girl named Steph, and Steve would see and hear Biff as a girl named Buffy. The same went for Sarah and Tiffany.
