"Come on," said Joseph. "Your name's not Stephanie. It's Jonnie."
"Just testing" replied Jon.
The way the wishes worked, Joseph would forget any wish and think nothing had changed. On the other hand, Jon would remember what changed. Which meant Jon wouldn't know his own new name--he had to get Joseph to say it. And obviously 'Jon' couldn't really be it. So he claimed to be Stephanie in order to get Joseph to state his name.
So the test worked and he had his answer. Jon's new name was 'Jonnie' now, but it was shortened to 'Jon' occasionally.
The wish wasn't very good. Jonnie didn't like being a girl. But it could have been a lot worse. Still, she had to get Joseph to make his last wish--and hopefully, get him to reverse the girl wish. And she had to get Joseph to do it in front of her, or otherwise she wouldn't know what changed either.
"So what is it?" asked Jonnie. "I mean, what wish would you make if you could have a wish?"
"I said... funny, I don't remember what I said." Of course he didn't--after he made the wish, he and everyone else thought that Jonnie had always been that way. So he didn't remember using two wishes and he didn't remember that Jon had ever been a guy.
"I guess you never said it. Wait a minute... could you do me a favor? Tell me what your wish is, but don't say 'I wish'."
"Why would I do a thing like that, babe? I mean, it's not as if I'm going to get my wish to begin with, so it wouldn't matter if I said 'I wish....'"
