At school the next day John talked to Karen before school. He offered to try to unwish her "breast situation" but she demanded that he wait until after school before they make any wishes so that they can think out the details without being rushed. So John went to his classes like usual until his third period class let out for lunch. Lunch at John's school was a real event since they were an hour long and the students were free to leave campus to go to the local restaurants for their noon lunch. Since Karen had to go to a math tutorial during this time Jon decided to go with Joseph to the local cafeteria on North St. John caught up with him as he was by the gym exit in the parking lot.
"Hey, John! How are things going for you," asked Joseph.
"Alright. How about you?"
"Pretty good. Today is my 17th birthday so I'm getting $200 from my parents to spend at the mall."
"Oh man. I forgot that today was your birthday. I wish that I had something special for you that I could give you," said John. Just then the stone that John kept in his pocket grew warm and John suddenly realized that he had just made a wish. John saw a ball of light from the stone rise from his pocket and hit Jospeh, who was looking in another direction at the moment, in the chest where it disappeared inside of him.
"What did my wish just do," wondered John, "nothing seems to have changed."
"Uh, Joseph. I'll be right back in a sec.," said John as he walked behind the gym where nobody could see or hear him.
In a whisper John said,"I wish that I knew what my last wish did."
The rock grew warm and a voice inside of John's head said,"The intended target, Joseph Williams, was given a wish for his birthday. The wish will be granted like any other wish made by the stone. The same rules apply to his wish."
"Oh, shit. I've gotta get out there and make sure that he doesn't do anything stupid with that wish," thought John, who realized that he had to make Joseph make a small wish without him knowing that he was making a wish.
John looked around the corner at Joseph. He knew that this wasn't going to be easy.
