The two of them finally got to Paige's house. Jon had tried in vain to rectify his stride, but such efforts only made his hips sway more to the side.
At the house, they decided not to burst in as that might lead to more problems. They would go around the back where Karyn (now the more nimble of the two) would climb a tree to a balcony outside Paige's room and start looking for the stone. Jon, meanwhile, would go in through the backdoor and do the same.
Karyn started around one side and Jon around the other, but when he got halfway there he decided that he might as well just go in through the front as would be the least expected. After all, how many people try to sneak into a house from the front door? He turned around and back. The door was unlocked, so he let himself in.
Inside, he decided to start in the TV room. When Becky leaves things here, she often does it on the lamp-table beside the couch, so it seemed the most likely place for her to leave the rock. Walking through the double-doors, he suddenly stood still; he was surprised or scared; he just felt himself unable to move.
"Well, well, well," said Becky who was sitting comfortably on the couch with her friends Paige and Dawn. "You little sneak. You thought you could come in here and take the rock from us and leave without our ever knowing. Well, Jon, I'm not that dumb. We've been sitting here watching your every move on the TV. See? Turn and look."
Jon felt compelled to turn toward the television only to see his own body (if he could call it his own) making the same moves.
"This little rock is amazing," continued Becky. "I watched you all the way over; that's when I got the idea that you needed to improve your walk. I must say, it is much nicer now; if I were a guy, I don't think I'd be able to stop watching. I also figured that it would be much more polite for you to come right on into the house and avail yourself of your presence; sneaking around back and snooping around a house is not very good manners.
"Now that you are here, we want you to know that we appreciate your presence, an appreciation that we will demonstrate now."
