"I go to your school, remember? That's how I know who you are. So I know there's no science fair coming up."

Jon really wasn't sure what to do. Finally he decided that the best thing to do was to not actually lie, just to leave out a few things. Like the stone.
"Okay, you got me," he said. "Here's the story. Karyn did make the remote, and we did come here to experiment. But it isn't science, it's magic, and it isn't a science fair project or anything to do with school. I'm afraid we have to be very careful about telling people things or explaining, so you'll just have to accept that we have a magic remote. You saw it, after all."
"And you're really Jon, and you're Karyn?"
"Right, Gwen."
"And the button I pressed... the ORIG?"
"It changes you back from whatever you're transformed to."
"I see! So you were wearing clothes, and Karyn was naked."
"No! I'm not sure why that happened, but I have a guess. I think because Karyn was transformed into an object, her clothes got sent back to her luggage. They didn't become part of the transformation. Maybe there's a setting for that."
While Karyn got her clothes out of the luggage and put them on, Gwen sat down with the remote and fiddled with the keypad, not pointing it at anyone. A few minutes later, she said "I found it!"
"You found what?" wondered Jon.
"I found the setting for clothes becoming part of the transformation. It was set to 'only when necessary'. I just changed it to 'always'."
"You mean I was right and it really...? That was just a guess!"
"But anyway, Jon, this thing is great! I'm going to use it on myself and get rid of my extra weight...." She pointed the remote at herself, and fiddled with it, hoping she'd figured out the correct way to do it....
