Yukio woke up the next morning dreading what she might find downstairs. There was definitely something going on with her parents. Her mother and father were almost acting like each other, mother was much more assertive while her father was more…submissive often deferring to his wife when a decision needed to be made
.
Sighing, Yukio got up and got dressed and went down for breakfast. She found her mother at the table reading the morning paper while her father was quietly eating his breakfast. Yukio stopped at the door.
“Mother? Father?” She asked looking at both of them. Normally it was the other way around with her father reading the paper. “Are you ok?” She asked nervously.
“We’re fine sweetheart.” Her father said meekly looking up at her smiling. Yukio’s mother, however, lowered the paper and looked at her frowning.
“Your hair is getting too long Yukio.” She said rather sternly. “Perhaps you should get it cut.” She added in a tone that sounded that it was an order and not a suggestion.
“But mother!” Yukio protested and almost immediately regretting it. Father gasped while her mother put the paper down and stood up. “Yukio Meshida!” Her mother almost shouted. Yukio was shocked, her mother never acted like this. It was usually her father who didn’t like to be argued with. “Are you defying me?” She asked angrily.
“But mother, father.” Yukio tried again. “Don’t you see that you are not yourselves?” She asked looking at them.
“I think that you are the one that’s not yourself Yukio.” Mother replied. Yukio just stood there in shock.
“But…” Yukio started again but mother silenced her with a look and Yukio decided to drop it. She sat down and had her breakfast.
