Karyn held out the stone to me. "Do you have a wish?"
"Good question," I replied, simply taking the stone from her. "I'll have to think about it."
I wanted to wish for something that was good-natured. The stone was a powerful item and I knew that power leads to corruption. I wasn't stupid. But if used wisely, power could be used for good, and not evil.
But I also wanted to make a wish that would benefit myself. Unfortunately, selfish wishes are just that: selfish. If I wasn't careful, I could end up hurting people I care about with something like that. Sure, I could wish to become a millionaire, but how would my friends and family change because of it? Would Karyn still want to be my friend? And if she did, would it be just because I was rich and not because of who I was?
No, selfish wishes usually do more harm than good, no matter how good the intentions are. I had to make a wish that would benefit others. But what would that wish be?
