I ran back into the main room of the suite, highly embarrassed and very confused. I had no idea what had gotten into Karyn to make her act this way. I mean, she'd never acted like this before around me! I guess maybe she just didn't consider it the same to be around animals as to be around people, so acted differently, but I wasn't really an animal. I mean, I might look like one, but that didn't make me one, did it? Karyn knew I was really a human, so she really ought to know better... shouldn't she?
I padded around the bedroom kind of absently as my thoughts whirled and found myself more acting on instinct than any conscious decision. My nose guided me around the room as I tracked down various scents. Despite the house being literally created by her wish just today, nothing smelled particularly new or particularly old. The furniture was all in excellent shape and the fabric not faded -- there was a light coat of dust under the bed, but nothing like a decades-long abandoned house should have.
Something about a set of bookshelves stirred me out of my distraction and the tracking of scents. The bookshelves were large, nice oak shelves, but they were totally empty. I wondered why there were here -- just to complete the decor? If Karyn needed books, wouldn't the books be in the shelves? Maybe it was for books she would get later? I groomed a paw absently as I thought, then finally gave up on trying to predict the logic of the wish she had made. It was beyond me -- the magic or whatever it was was operating at a completely different level than I could easily deal with.
On the other side of the bedroom from the bath, my nose led me to another door which had the scent of cloth coming out from under it. Fortunately, it was not fully closed so I could just push it open without worrying about the doorknob. It was dark inside the closet -- it was actually getting dark quickly as the sun set, leaving the only light coming from the open bathroom door. Despite the lack of light, I could just make out some of the shapes inside the closet.
And it was a huge closet! Bigger than my old entire bedroom! Shelves, racks, hangers, a full length mirror... everything for someone's wardrobe, except for the clothes! Like the shelves, the closet was empty, except for a couple items that I found more by scent than by sight. One was a robe or bathrobe of some sort hanging from a hook, the other was something silken. I felt my ears splay. Clothes for Karyn? Just this? Well, I suppose it was enough to get her through the night... I guess this was supposed to be Karyn's room? I sniffed around the closet some more and then padded back out into the dark bedroom. If this was Karyn's room, then I should probably find mine. I wondered if it was as nice as this one.
I walked up to the doors that went back to the hallway. Unfortunately, Karyn had closed them behind her. I looked up at the doorknobs, then back at my paws. I guessed I could become human or something just long enough to open them, but even so, I really didn't want to go padding around the house as a naked human!
Before I could open the door, though...
