Seemingly out of nowhere, a song started playing. "Where's that coming from?" asked Jonnie.
"I think it's your cell phone, Mom," answered Kathy.
"Where?" Jonnie didn't see any pockets on her blouse or skirt.
Carol pointed at a purse that hadn't existed a moment ago. "In there, Mom."
"Oh." Jonnie took out a phone she'd never seen before. Hopefully it wasn't some super-high tech gizmo she couldn't figure out. "Hello?" She gasped.
"Who is that?" whispered Karyn.
Jonnie's eyes were wide open as she struggled to talk to the person on the end. "Uh huh ... yup ... mmm hmm ... see you ... bye." Jonnie put the phone back into her purse.
Karyn no longer had to speak softly. "So who was it?"
"My ... husband."
"Daddy!" said her daughters in unison.
"But you're not supposed to have a daddy," stated Jonnie. "I wished that all records showed that you have very rich parents who died recently, and no other relatives."
"I think the key word here is 'records,'" said Karyn. "Obviously they do have at least two relatives off the record: you, their mother, and whoever their daddy is. What did he say to you, anyway?"
"Well ..." started Jonnie.
