Karyn didn't know long it took from the start of contractions to birth. A human woman could be in labor for many hours, but for all she knew it could be less for a leopard.
It took her a few minutes to get up the nerve to reach in for the rock again, but as she reached in Jonni twitched, and her belly knocked the rock almost into Karyn's hands. Karyn picked it up.
"I wish that Jon would be human again, dressed normally, no longer pregnant with kittens, that Jon and I be out of this cage, and that nobody other than me and Jon would remember that there was ever a leopard Jonni here.
Suddenly things shifted around them. They were standing near the leopard cage at the zoo but outside, and Jon was human again. But he was also lying on the ground, his belly bulging more than seemed possible, and still in pain. Argh. The wish hadn't said that he not be pregnant, just that he not be pregnant with kittens, and besides in the earlier wish she wanted to see Jon be the mother... and that still had to come true.
She caught sight of a little plaque near the leopard cage, the kind that lots of zoos have telling the visitors a few facts about the animal in the cage. It said quite a few things, but what she noticed most was the line saying leopards have two to four babies per litter. If Jon had been a pregnant leopard and him and the babies became human....
"Dammit!" she said. "I wish for Jon to be in a hospital, and for me to be with him so that I still can see him be the mother, I wish that Jon be able to stand the pain, and I wish for the birth to happen in the next few minutes with no complications."
Suddenly things shifted again, only this time Jon(ni) and Karyn were in another place. A doctor was saying "Push... Push..." and out came a healthy baby girl. Then they did it again and brought out the baby's twin sister.
They cut the cord and showed the babies to Jonnie.
Hmm, thought Karyn, what next? "I wish Jon and the babies were released from the hospital and we were at his house."
Jonnie sat up on his bed. "Ohh... that hurt so much. But somehow near the end I was able to bear it. What happened to...?" She stopped, because there was a weight on her legs. She looked to see a baby crawling over her legs and another nearby. "Those are... I'm a mother!"
Well, that's one wish granted, thought Karyn. "I tried to do what I could, Jon, but once they were human I couldn't bring myself to make babies just vanish."
Jonnie sighed. "Give me the rock. This is a mess. What if Mom walks in?"
"What are you going to do?"
"Just keep this from causing trouble."
"Okay" said Karyn. Before she gave Jon the rock, though, she made her own wish. "I wish that Jon, or whoever he becomes, won't ever get rid of the babies and that they always know that they're his daughters and he's their mother."
"What? What was that for?"
"You were going to make them disappear."
"No I wasn't. Now please let me have the stone."
Karyn handed Jonni the stone, and Jonni took it and said "I wish...."
