"I wish that there was someone who could help us!" Karyn cried out, ignoring the warning growl I gave her about the stone.
The world gave a wrenching twist, and I found myself back in the cage at the zoo, except now Karyn was there, too! The woman I had seen in the zoo uniform was also there, and talking to Karyn.
"Jonni there is doing fine," the woman said, pointing my way with the clipboard she was carrying. "She should give birth any day now. I can't say how glad we are that you loaned your pet to us for ... are you okay, miss?"
Karyn was gaping around at the room with all its veterinary supplies. I growled helplessly as I saw her shocked, pale face -- then her eyes rolled back up in her head and she fainted. The woman tried to catch her, but it was too late -- Karyn fell over and her head hit the concrete floor pretty solidly. The rock went tumbling from her grasp and landed near the cage. I managed enough presence of mind as the woman shouted for help to stick a paw through the bars and drag the rock closer.
"I wish Karyn was okay!" I said, or tried to. Nothing came out but an odd, plaintive growling... and no wish happened. I could not make any wishes without being able to speak! More people started rushing into the room. I awkwardly managed to paw the rock fully into my cage and covered it with my rather round body, trying to ignore the kicks I felt inside.
I looked up towards Karyn again, trying not to panic. They had her propped a little and were waving smelling salts under nose. "I called 911, they have an ambulance on the way. That was a pretty serious knock on the head she took."
"She's coming around. You okay?"
I heard Karyn's voice from the other side of the group of concerned zoo employees crouching around here. "Wh-where... where am I?"
"The zoo. We were just talking about Jonni --"
Karyn sounded confused. "Who? Who's Jonni? I... I can't remember."
