"I know, but you were acting like a girl."

"No I wasn't!" Jon exclaimed as he stood with his hands on his hips, looking to everyone as an upset girl.

It was all Karyn could do not to laugh at her friend. "Whatever." She said, holding her hands to make a 'W'.

Before Jon could get more upset, the first bell rang and he and Karyn had to hurry so as not to be late for class.

While part of Jon expected at least someone to comment negatively about his being in the play, he received only positive comments. Even people who normally didn't much like him gave him positive comments about his taking the part.

The school day finally ended and Jon and Karyn arrived in the auditorium for play practice.

Once everyone was there, Mrs. Rose announced that she had filled the last parts for the play. She said that Jon had bravely accepted the part of Catherine Jane, in spite of his concerns. With a few other announcements out of the way, play practice started.

While Jon was doing an excellent job of learning the part of Catherine Jane, there was a problem. About half way through the play, Mrs. Rose called everyone together and said, "Jon is doing a good job learning his part, but there is a problem. All of you, to include Jon, are seeing Jon as a boy doing a girl's part. You are acting like that as well. Maybe for a play like Victor/Victoria, that might work, but we need Jon to portray a young woman. If he fails, then the play fails."

"Victor who?" asked Ralph Zimmerman.

"Never mind Ralph." Mrs. Rose said. "The point is that if you don't think of Jon as a girl, then the play won't work."

"What are we going to do?" Asked Karyn as she moved next to Jon.

"We are going
