Mrs. MacGillicutty was a widow in her late seventies. While her health was generally good, her hearing and eye sight were not what that they had been.
How she came to possess the magic stone is of no importance, nor is exactly how Jon's mother (now daughter) actually lost the magic stone. Let's say that Mrs. MacGillicutty did come into possession of the magic stone, without knowing of or understanding it's powers.
She quickly came to think of this rock as a good luck piece and carried it with her every where she went.
