Sue stopped in mid wish, then finished her wish by saying "...that you'd hand me your phone, then sit down."
Karyn handed the phone over - wanting to tell this crazy dyke that Jonnie still loved her, but was still unable to.
"Crazy Dyke, huh?" said Sue -- and Karyn remembered that the witch could read her surface thoughts. "You'd better be more polite to me, Karyn. I can be a terrible enemy."
Sue took a deep breath, then said "Hello, Jonnie."
Jonnie started talking, and it was obvious that Sue's formerly simple-minded girlfriend was at least somewhat smarter. She still spoke in her high, breathy sing-song, but her words and sentence structure were more distinct. Not educated, but not stupid.
Sue wasn't sure if she liked that. Part of Jonnie's charm was her simplicity. Her need to be taken care of. Sue...was ashamed to admit it, but...she didn't think she liked a smarter Jonnie. She might just have to wish Jonnie back into an airhead, when this was over. A smart Jonnie would ruin the dynamic of their relationship.
"Oh, please don't hurt Karyn, Suzie! She was my best friend, and she was only trying to protect me. She just wants what's best for me, Sue. If you think about it, she's just like you. She was looking out for me, see?"
Sue glanced at Karyn, who was looking at the ground with an intense expression on her face. Sue red her mind, and caught
Sunshine, lollypops and rainbows, everything that do-wah diddy something-something...makes everyday better. Brighter than some kind of...penny, everyday that way I know that you are loved...
Stupid bitch seemed to be trying to remember the words to some sort of song. Not even thinking about Jonnie.
Which was wrong. Karyn had quietly palmed a baseball-sized stone when she sat down, and - remembering that Sue could only read surface thoughts - was keeping-up a constant stream of mental chatter in her head. Songs and poems and nursery rhymes ran in a loop behind her eyes, to cover that she was preparing to attack if she had to. Karyn was a good shot with a softball, and she figured that she might be able to surprise the woman with a sudden throw. With luck, she'd be able to knock the stone from her hand, then snatch it up before Sue could pounce on it.
...Sunshine, lollypops and...rainbows, hey-hey-yeah, that's something something you don't want to, mix together...
"You sound well, Jonnie. I could just wish myself to your location, or wish you here...but I'd rather that you told me where you were..."
"What did you do to Karyn, you bitch!" snarled a woman she'd never heard before, but common sense told her was probably Jonnie's mother.
"And who are you, miss?"
"I'm the mother of the boy whose life you tried to ruin! I'm the woman who's been crying her eyes out, wondering where her son was! Now that I have him...her back, I'm not going to just let you take her! Who are you to twist peoples lives like this? Jonnie says she loves you, but I..."
"Then Jonnie's opinions should be respected. Please keep a civil tongue in your mouth, miss. Or I'll wish that Jonnie didn't know who her mothers was, and wish you away to Tijuana...where you can suck off the tourists and perform Donkey Shows for the rest of your life. I don't feel like having a mother in law."
Jonnie snatched the phone away, and Jonnie started babbling again, this time panic was making her sound as disorganized and simple as the Jonnie she knew and loved. It was cute.
"Don' hurt my mom, Suzie! She ain't done nothin' to you, an' I love her so much! Don' hurt Karyn either, huh? I'm at 2545 Taylor Drive. You know where that is?"
Jonnie's mom wailed "No! Don't tell her!" and Sue decided right than that she didn't want to put up with that any more than she had to. Mom wasn't going to be in the picture much longer. If she was lucky, Sue would only make her forget Jonnie. If she pissed her off to much, she'd be edited out of existence like a minor character in a soap opera.
"Thanks so much, Jonnie. And baby...it's going to be alright. We'll be a happy couple again. And don't worry about your mom and Karyn...they'll both be just fine."
She shot Karyn a wicked glance, and Karyn...
...how deep is your love, is your love how deep is your love something about something else, cause we're livin' in a world of fools...
...knew she'd better act fast, if she was going to act at all.
