Karyn had been to Jon's house for dinner before. It was almost the same... well, except for Shawn's mother asking Shawn if she was going out with Karyn, to which Karyn looked a little uncomfortable, but said "no".
After dinner, Shawn did the dishes. Karyn waited. Then she noticed something on the counter. "You've got a college acceptance notice there," she said.
"Of course I do," said Shawn. It's been lying there for a month.
"How are you going to go to college? You applied as Jon, right?"
"I... Good point. I don't know, really. I suppose I need to teleport there and wish that I applied as Shawn."
"And that's not all. Don't you have relatives outside the city? Twitter accounts? Drivers license? It's in a computer somewhere, you know."
"I'll fix all that stuff up. I can just...." Suddenly there was a buzzing sound coming from Shawn's pocket. She got out her phone and opened it, looking at the contact name, "Hello, Mia?" What exactly was his... her... ex-girlfriend calling her for?
"Shawn? Thank god... Look, I know we had an argument but...."
"Mia? It's.... well, I've had so much stuff happen to me that I have more to worry about than that." The argument hadn't been serious anyway. It was more that they just hadn't really permanently hooked up with each other to begin with.
"It's Dad. He found out. He saw a picture of me at the Pride March. I lied to him, I told him I was just helping a friend. Then he took my yearbook and looked up your picture. When he found out that 'Shawn' is a girl he went ballistic. I'm grounded for a week for lying about you being a guy and I don't know what else he's going to do...."
"I'll be right over."
"Are you crazy? You can't come here!"
"Sorry, Mia, I just.... I really don't know what to do. Me and Karyn are going to figure out something. It's all my fault."
"Shawn... if I thought it was all your fault I'd have never called you. You didn't make me like girls, you just got me to admit it."
"I don't mean it that way. I'm not sure what I mean, I just feel it's all my fault even though it's not."
"I'm glad you're letting me talk to you. I think I'm in big trouble. If only my parents were as good as yours."
"You can always come here. If you're ever ungrounded."
"I don't even know if I'm going to be able to keep my phone. Look, I really didn't mean to dump all of this on you but I just had to talk to somebody. All right? Bye, Shawn. I'll see you at school tomorrow."
"Bye Mia." Shawn closed the phone and put it away.
"What was all that about?" asked Karyn.
"Oh, what it's about is that I did a lot worse than just forgetting to wish to put my driver's license in a database. It's Mia. Her dad's angry at her because she's a lesbian. It's my fault, Karyn. I decided that my new life as a girl would keep my history as much as I could. So I was still dating her. But if I'm a girl and I was still dating her, she's a lesbian or at least bisexual. I changed her sexual orientation and I made her family hate her...."
Karyn listened and said, "No, Jon."
"It's Shawn now."
"No, Shawn. It isn't your fault. It's not your fault that you became a girl, and once you did, all your choices were bad. So you made her a lesbian. It was either that or keep her from remembering her going out with you. Is amnesia that much better than being a lesbian?"
"Maybe not... but I still feel responsible and I'm not even sure it's a good idea to tell her why...."
