"I don't know," said Karyn, "but we can't just sit around inside all day. Tomorrow's Sunday and then it's back to school."
"I'm sorry, but I'm not ready to face the world like this. It was hard enough facing the delivery man!"
Karyn put her hands on her hips. "Jon, you can't become a recluse! I mean, what happens if the wish is permanent, and we can't fix it?" She grimaced. "I know how hard this must be for you, but you're still you on the inside, and that's what counts, right? All that matters is what's on the inside?" Karyn thought back to when they'd been younger. Karyn had been a bit pudgy and had terrible acne, and since she'd been a late bloomer, all the kids had made fun of her. All of them except Jon, that is, who'd stuck by her side, reminding her that who she was on the inside is what counted.
Now it was Jon's turn to frown, as he realized that he'd been trapped. If he insisted that he was different, then that was like saying he'd lied to Karyn all those years ago. But if he left the house, he didn't know if he'd be able to handle it, especially if someone realized who he was. His social life as he knew it would be over, and he risked far worse things, he thought, such as his sanity.
When faced with two difficult choices, Jon realized that there was only one choice he could make.
