CJ whispered, "I wish Mom would relax, let herself fall in love with Mr. Stevenson, and forget I was ever a boy named Jon."
As the stone flashed, she quickly whispered, "I wish Karyn would forget I was ever Jon, and would think she's my babysitter." The stone flashed again.
There, CJ thought. That should do it. It was impulsive, but Catherine-Jane was a clever girl, and she'd quickly intuited that her mother was having second thoughts about Mr. Stevenson, which she correctly chalked up to CJ. She gambled that her mother's wish -- that everyone else but Linda, Karyn, and CJ forget that CJ had ever been Jon -- didn't mean that Karyn and Linda would always remember Jon, just that they would not forget him at that instant.
CJ wanted her mother to be happy, and the best way she could think to do that was get everyone to believe she'd always been Catherine-Jane.
