Jon met up with Karyn before the morning bell. He waved hello, and she took a seat on the grass next to him. It took him a moment to realize what was off. "You, uh... your doll makeup?"
"It's permanent." Karyn didn't seem too upset, she just stated a fact. "Good thing the label is where it won't show. If anyone does see that, I can just tell them it's a tattoo."
"Oh... I'm sorry. I must have worded it wrong. How can we fix it... maybe give you a new face?"
"It's okay."
"It's okay?" Jon was puzzled. "But it makes you look like a toy."
"I, uh, I don't mind it. I sort of think I might like to get a little attention for a change."
"I pay attention to you."
"Yeah, you do." She leaned her head on his shoulder.
He felt his heart beat faster. What should he do, what should he say. As the seconds ticked by and became minutes, he relaxed, putting his arm around her. She gave a happy murmer.
After a few minutes of the quiet affection, it was Karyn who finally broke the silence. "So... Are we a couple now?"
"I think so. Do you want to be?"
"I do. I was thinking about it a lot last night. You've always been there for me, Jon, and after everything that's happened I don't see why we shouldn't be more than friends."
He nodded enthusiastically. "That's great. I feel the same way." He gave her a little squeeze. "But, uh... That stuff we did?" He paused, licking his lips nervously. "The sex? I have to know... was that just because of the wish?"
"I... can't tell either. Part of it was me. I'm still coming to terms with it. I don't think we should keep having sex if that's what you mean... at least not right away. But I don't regret anything we did. Even if I was a little different from myself, I loved it at the time. And I don't blame you for saying yes after I asked you to."
He nodded. "I guess that makes sense. I'm glad."
The bell rang.
