Nothing seemed to happen.
"What?!" exclaimed Karyn. She was sure it had worked. This was the correct stone, right? It flashed... so it had to have been magic.
"I wish that Sarah would fall unconscious for ten minutes," she said.
This time it worked.
"What's going on?" asked Jon. "You tried to zap Sarah... It didn't work..."
"I don't know. Maybe the stone just can't erase someone from existence. Lemme try some other things. I wish that Jon's closet was full of female clothes because of a prank by his brother, but he put Jon's regular clothes back now. I wish Jon doesn't know about the stone because he hit his head and forgot, but that'll wear off now."
"Owwww!" said Jon, rubbing his head. "All of a sudden I have this sore spot... I must have hit my head a little hard... but you did it! It's over! I remember the stone, and I'm sure I can go home and change right now."
"It isn't over," said Karyn. "Sarah wasn't affected by my wish. I'm not sure why. Maybe the stone doesn't work that way... Maybe she wished for some kind of protection. But I don't like it."
"Me neither," said Jon. "If only we could figure out... Of course!" He snatched the stone from Karyn. "I wish we knew why Karyn couldn't wish Sarah was never born."
There was no answer.
"I wish we knew how to wish Sarah was never born."
This time the stone answered, as voices in their heads. "That wish has already been made."
"Already been made?" said Karyn. "It can't have already been made. Sarah's still here! How can she have never been born and still be here? That doesn't make any sense!"
"Wait," said Jon. "I see what happened. Obviously she's still here without having ever been born."
"But that doesn't make sense."
"Sure it makes sense, if she's now..."
