Karyn had been a wreck all morning. Third period was art, her favorite class, and she couldn't even pay attention to Ms. Halverson's lecture on chiaroscuro. She couldn't stop thinking about Jon, and what Sarah was doing to him. She imagined him in his class right now- World History. That was one of Jon's favorite subjects... but maybe it wasn't anymore.

She pictured him sitting there, tapping his pink fingernails against the desk, rolling his eyes at Mr. Wood trying to explain the Byzantine Empire. Jon loved that ancient stuff, but Karyn wondered if he'd be more concerned about some stupid cheerleader gossip before the day was out.

A hand on her shoulder made Karyn snap out of it. She realized she'd been just staring at her desk. Ms. Halverson looked down at her and smiled.

"Come on Karyn, class is over. You don't want to miss lunch, do you?"

Karyn shook her head and stood up silently. She'd been so lost in her own thoughts she hadn't even heard the bell dismiss the class. As she walked to the cafeteria, her thoughts turned to Sarah. Karyn seethed with anger inside, clenching her fists while she walked. She hated that bitch so much she...

Wait. That was it... her anger had been so intense the idea seemed to materialize out of nowhere. She hated Sarah. And Sarah hated her. It was a mutual resentment that had been built up over years for all kinds of reasons. But Jon was different. Karyn liked Jon. Even when they argued over which Star Trek movie was the best, she never really got mad at him.

Karyn could use that. No matter how much Jon became like Sarah, he'd still be Jon to her. And Karyn would like Jon, be nice to him, be his friend, no matter what. If she could show him unconditional friendship, then maybe he'd turn out like less of a bitch. Or so she hoped. It was the only option she had.

Karyn took a deep breath and entered the lunch room, finding her usual table and silently dreading what had become of Jon in the three hours since she'd last seen him.
