For thirteen years, researchers had attempted to explain what that meant. Now they believed they finally could.
Amara touched the display. A timeline appeared behind her. Hundreds of recorded anomalies stretched across it. Some were barely measurable. Others had temporarily produced contradictory historical records. A few involved events whose dates, participants or circumstances appeared to have shifted. Several had resulted in documentary inconsistencies that persisted for months before resolving themselves.
Individually, the cases looked chaotic. Taken together, they did not.
Amara touched the display again.
The timeline disappeared and was replaced by a graph showing the measured behaviour of dozens of anomalies. She had seen the graph hundreds of times. It still bothered her. The affected continuity did not simply fail. It moved progressively away from its previously measured historical state. That was the part that had changed everything.
For years, researchers had treated each anomaly as an isolated event. A date that no longer matched. A person missing from a record. An event whose circumstances seemed to have changed. But what if they were not isolated? What if they were all examples of the same thing?
Amara looked out across the auditorium.

There was one final question.
The question that had followed Elena Varga's work from the moment the Great Atlantic Blackout had somehow moved four days through history. The question that, despite all their instruments, all their research and all the anomalies they had discovered since, Amara still could not answer.
