Calling for us to get together, we all were gathered at the edge of the village entrenched in the coral reef. It was time for us to go. We swam with a good pace towards the cove. We had to be really careful as we moved through territory that could be hostile. All of us were armed with a trident made of sturdy sea glass. This was to be used for our protection. Being perfectly honest, I was not confident that I was going to be able to defend myself if attacked by an enemy. We were making good time before we heard some shouting. "What's going on over there?" my squad leader asked with excitement in his eyes as he drew his trident. The other squad leader sighed and rolled his eyes. He said "It doesn't matter right now. We have a pilgrimage to complete. If it's not in our way, we can ignore it." My squad leader deflated. I decided to speak up for him. "It might be important later. We need to go through this area on both trips. Not knowing what's goin on might get us in trouble later on. I think our squad can go and check it out. You can go ahead and we will report back to you at the cove later on."

I pitched it to go see what was goin on. Having some allies to fight something would be good for grinding a couple of levels. My squad leader had the final say for his own group. Now that he had some backup and a legitimate reason to be nosy, that was what he was going to do. "Alright. We are going to investigate. Let's go." The other squad leader rolled his eyes a second time. He was not impressed with us. "You better make it to the cove by night fall. You need to be there in the light of the full moon for it to work." he warned. Our squads split. We went to where we were hearing the shouting. There were 3 mermen fighting with spears. 2 of them were ganging up on the other. These were full adults from all the bulk they had. They also seemed to be a heavier type of fish than our tribe was. "You just couldn't learn your place Nabo. A warrior on the outskirts can't bond with a princess." one of the attackers mocked. The one being attacked glared at them. "The princess and I are one in heart. I will never give up." he said. "Our leader is with her now. They are pledging their bond to the tribe!"

Doing something like this was absolutely diabolical. Nabo looked crushed by that information. I looked at the leader of my squad. "We have to go in and fight. That's not a fair fight." I said. He gripped his trident tighter. "They are adults though. You sure we can take them?" he asked. He was having second thoughts. One of the other non warriors drew his trident. "I never wanted to be a caregiver. This is my only chance to be a warrior. I'm not losing it." he said. I looked at the 3 warriors of the group. "I feel the exact same way. You better not disgrace us by running from doing the right thing like cowards. You don't deserve your manhood if you do!" That spurred them all to action. We charged the conflict. We all surrounded the one hanging back. All of us were stabbing him with our tridents. The warrior being attacked had got decent hits on both of them. This warrior was much bigger and stronger than us. Our attacks only chipped at his health. When he hit us, it was devastating. The members of the tribe were trained in combat from the time they could hold a trident. We 6 managed to kill him.
