"What do you mean, you dropped the rock?" Karyn said. "You dropped a powerful magical object capable of changing our reality? How do you know someone hasn't turned us into something without us even knowing it?"
Jon rubbed his head. "We should look for it. I should have wished I couldn't lose it."
"That might have been a good idea," Karyn said. "Honestly Jon, I don't know how you can be..."
FLASH
Jon blinked and frowned. He had this creepy feeling all of the sudden. As if something had happened. But everything seemed the same. He looked at Karyn. She'd trailed off, as if she'd sensed something too. "I just got this weird feeling...that something has changed."
"Me too," Karyn said.
It didn't take them long to find out what, and it was a surprisingly small change, both literally and figuratively:
The contents of Jons pockets had changed to contain a folded piece of paper, just big enough to make it's presence felt when he moved.
It read
"Dear Jon
I graciously thank you for the (likely unintentional) donation of the stone.
Rest assured I am not so uncouth to repay this gift, by causing unnecessary trouble for you and your loved ones.
As your formerly ginger friend so aptly demonstrated wishes made in haste may easily become wishes I regret for the rest of my life, so I will take a few days to ponder my next steps. I may reveal my identity at a later date, or even return the stone, but for now I will proceed carefully and keep my option open.
Please do not repay my reluctance to casually alter your mind via wishes by trying to hunt me down.
Best regards
A anonymous friend "
They both stared down at the letter, until Karyn let out a scoff "So the silver line is: whoever took the stone obviously is kind of a nerd, right? Or can you imagine a stuck-up bitch like Sarah writing something like that"
