They walked towards the mall exit, but Jon lagged behind. She had stumbled twice on the way there. And she was gaining attention again. But this time people thought that she might be drunk or something.
As they walked through the parking lot, Jon said "I wish I wasn't wearing heels." She half expected it to come true. (Why not? Her last wish came true.) But it didn't.
What did happen, however, was that Melissa's shoes changed. Instead of heels, she now wore a pair of sandals.
Wait a minute, Jon thought to herself. My last wish was granted to me and this wish was granted to Melissa? What's going on?
But then Jon remembered the events that led her to the mall. Sarah's first wish was granted to herself, then her second wish was granted to Jon. And then Jon's first wish was granted to herself, then her second wish was granted to Melissa. It was almost like some sort of "wish chain" was happening. Something like this could have only been made possible by the stone, so at least Jon knew the source of all the trouble. She just had to get it back and try to stop this chain wishing from continuing. If she could.
They got into Melissa's car and zoomed off towards Sarah's house.
