Ever since Supergirl made her big appearance, Mr. Lord was on Boris' case to find any clue to her secret identity. Boris sent his underlings to plant bugs in every residency and commercial property within 50 kilometers of the airplane incident, and then he set up an artificial intelligence to sort through all the data and flag any discussion of Supergirl. He had listened to hours of pointless conversations about everything from Supergirl as a role model for young girls to whether or not her breasts were sufficiently large for horny men to deem her an acceptable masturbatory fantasy. He was sick and tired of his assignment.

After several days of this crap, he finally struck gold. The A.I. flagged a very telling phrase coming from the Black residency: "I'm Supergirl."

Boris immediately downloaded everything from the listening devices at the Black residence and hacked into the webcam of Karyn Black to get a live video feed. He watched the conversation between the two girls with rapt attention, writing down everything that seemed important: Linda Lee Danvers, mind-alteration, Jon, transgender, wishing, adoptive sister, stone, lesbian

He didn't entirely understand what the two girls were talking about, but it was clear that Linda Lee Danvers was Supergirl, used to be a boy named Jon, and that a stone with associated wish-granting properties had enabled it. He did a search for a boy named Jon in the region and found a promising candidate: a boy who had mysteriously vanished shortly before Supergirl made her first appearance. Picking up the phone, he dialed the number of his favorite operative, a man who knew how to be nigh-undetectable, and told him to search the absent boy's house for anything that could be described as a "stone", place it into a containment box, and bring it to Boris immediately. "We may be looking at a kryptonite situation. Handle it with caution."

Once that was taken care of, he dialed his boss. "Mr. Lord? Sorry, I know it's late. I have good news."

He explained the situation in detail, including the mysterious stone and what Boris did to take care of it.

"You've done very good, Boris," Mr. Lord said once he had a moment to digest the new information. "You've more than earned that Christmas bonus."

"Thank you, sir," Boris said. "Your orders?"

"Continue to monitor both Linda Lee Danvers and Karyn Black," Mr. Lord said. "I want psychological profiles on them both. Have them monitored at all times but be discreet about it. Let them continue to believe themselves secure so their guards will be down. Do not underestimate Ms. Danvers simply because she looks like a girl. One wrong move could be the end of us."

"Yes, sir," Boris said. "I'll send my best operatives to plant more bugs, and I'll program more A.I.s to analyze the data. We'll be able to build effective pictures of them soon, good enough to design imposters so authentic their own mothers wouldn't be able to tell the difference."

"That's only one of several possibilities I've considered," Mr. Lord said. "But thank you. One more thing: send this stone to me directly as soon as you acquire it. If it's what I think it is, it could be the opportunity to make all of our dreams a reality."

"Yes, sir," Boris said. He saw an opportunity to say one of those really zippy supervillain lines and went for it: "You'll be getting stoned in no time!"

"...Uh, why don't you leave the one-liners to me?" Mr. Lord suggested, audibly wincing. "Send me a report when it's done."

"Yes, sir." Boris hung up and grumbled at his faux pas. Maybe there was a reason lackeys so rarely said one-liners? Anyway, he moved forward on his boss's instructions.
