"Wait a minute," said Karyn. "Jon, come over here, please?"
"I don't get it," said Jon. "What's going on?"
"You're with Sarah," said Karyn. "Girls like us need to keep away from Sarah."
"What ever are you talking about?" said Sarah.
Karyn looked at Sarah suspiciously and said "Jon, I think she has something of mine."
"What?" replied Sarah. "Now I really don't know what you're talking about."
"Jon? Come along..." said Karyn.
"Okay. I don't understand it, though. I just decided to invite Sarah over for a little while."
When they were a safe distance away, Karyn explained to Jon. "The other day I bought this magic rock at a flea market. It's capable of granting wishes, but each wish is permanent... I wasn't always a blonde. That was a wish I used to test it!"
"What do you mean? Magic wish stone?"
"Yeah."
"I've never heard of such a thing." Though Jon did idly wonder whether she could wish that her face looked more feminine. It was so much of a guy's face that if Jon didn't wear makeup, it would be impossible to tell from Jon's face that she was a girl. Or maybe her legs and feet; they looked exactly like a guy's. Still, the guys didn't seem to care.
"Before I bought it I wished I could have hair and breasts like Sarah, Jon. And it worked. You don't remember because my magic stone makes things happen as if they were always that way."
Little did Karyn know that the stone wasn't always hers. When Sarah had wished that Jon never heard about the stone, that didn't just wipe his memory, it made reality be just as if he never did hear about the stone. A reality in which Jon never heard about the stone had to be one where he never got the stone, so the owner of the stone was now Karyn.
"You're kidding," said Jon.
"I could prove it to you if I had it," said Karyn. "But I can't. It's missing, and I think Sarah took it. Mom told me she saw Sarah sneaking outside my window and I found that someone had cut the insect screening on it."
Meanwhile, Sarah, not even aware that Karyn now owned the stone, looked at it and considered another wish....
