Just then, Sarah heard Jon returning. Startled, she made the first wish that came to mind. "I wish Jon wouldn't find it odd for me to be going through his things."
The rock flashed, and Sarah look away. As she looked back, Jon re-entered the room, carrying two coke cans. Was it he imagination or did he seem - taller?
"Okay, I got us some sodas and WHOAH! Sarah, how many time do I gotta tell you to quit poking through my stuff?" Jon stepped over and before Sarah could react he grabbed the rock away from her.
"Hey!"
"Hey nothing! We'll talk about this later," he said, slipping the rock in his jeans pocket. "Anyway, mom's almost got dinner ready, so we'll do your homework after."
"Huh?" Sarah was distracted, not only by the losing the rock, but by the fact that Jon now definitely seemed much taller than before. "Oh, uh, I really can't stay for dinner with you Jon, but..."
"What do you mean, 'stay for dinner with me'? You feeling all right?"
"Jon!" came a voice from down the hall. "Dinner's on the table."
"We'll be right there," he replied. "Look, go wash your hands and come on down, OK?" With that, he turned and ran down the hallway.
As he left, Sarah wondered the rock had done to her. Curious, she turned and looked in Jon's dresser mirror.
"Oh no!" she moaned. The Sarah looking back at her was one she hadn't seen in several years - literally. She was almost a foot shorter, with wire-rim glasses (long since abandoned for contacts) and braces. The dress she'd worn was gone, replaced by jeans and a striped pullover shirt, and a pair of sneakers in place of her open-toed sandals.
Even through her despair, though, Sarah could see something else was different. She looked at herself more closely - her eyes were now hazel instead of green, her hair was a darker blonde, her chine was a little more pointed, and her nose slightly different. If she didn't know better, she'd swear she looked a little like...
"No! Oh no, please, no!" she said.
She turned and ran to the bed where she'd put her book. The High School History textbook was gone, replaced by what lookd like an Arithmetic book from third grade. Hoping se was wrong, she opened it to the first page.
Her heart dropped out of her chest as she read the inscription - "This Book Belongs To Sarah Sue Merlin".
Thanks to her wish, she was now Jon's little sister!
