Jon came to slowly blinking in the darkness. He felt strange, like his body was very far away or disconnected in some way. He felt fuzzy and when he tried to move his arm, nothing seemed to happen. He thought he should be panicking but his mind was wrapped in some sort of warm fog that made everything sort of dreamlike. He glanced around the room as much as he could, but didn't see much. It was quite dark, lit just by the indicator lights of various machines he seemed to be hooked up; was he in the hospital?
Being on morphine or something would at least explain why he felt so fuzzy. He wracked his brain but couldn't remember how he'd ended up here. The last thing he recalled was getting in the car to go to his grandfather's funeral. It had been a pretty gloomy way to start Spring Break. No wait, that wasn't quite right. They'd stopped somewhere on the way to the service... hadn't they?
He heard the sound of voices beyond his room, but couldn't make out what they were saying. It sounded like they were having some sort of whispered argument; it must be night at the hospital and they were trying to be quiet? Something about that didn't sound quite right but he let it slide for the moment while he tried to focus on his memories. It would make sense if there had been a car accident of some sort, but as he thought about it, his last memory didn't have him in the car. No, the family had stopped off at some sort of strange tech startup called SavePoint. His mom really wanted to go, insisting that it would make the family safer; she'd been understandably a bit high strung about safety in the days after her dad passed. Jon hadn't really paid attention to the salesperson's mumbo jumbo, his thoughts preoccupied with the loss of his favorite relative. There had been some sort of gizmo that looked a bit like a crown with flashing lights on it that they'd set on his head. He'd felt a pressure on his temples and then.... Then he was here.
Shit, did I get electrocuted or something? Jon wondered. He tried to shift again and felt his body move ever so slightly but he still didn't have much motor control. However, it seemed like it was enough to make one of the nearby machines go DING. The whispering outside the room stopped, and moments later the door whooshed open to reveal two figures in lab coats, silhouetted by a soft light from the hall.
"Good Morning, Jon," one of them said nervously, "I'm sure you have a lot of questions."
