Very true. Untill I took the time to read about the Dutch Republics (while preparing for a historical RPG) I too was unaware of the difference between them.
Just for the record I feel it should be pointed out that while Americans likes to think that WE invented modern democracy, it's realy more the child of the Dutch. Also, many of Washingtons supplies were bought from the Dutch. Before France and Spain involved themselves it was the Dutch Republics that kept us going. Without them...we wouldn't be here.
That's your history lesson for today. And remember to read that John Adams biography that came out last year (he was ambassador to the Dutch Republics) and (if you can find it) "The First Salute"
