Carly was still trying to work out where the voice was coming from she barely noticed Jody leave the shop to get her lunch. Saturday was one of the few shifts that she didn’t bring her own but she did only work a few streets away from a café.

She had laughingly blamed Rachael for her ever-expanding waistline but she would never dare tell her this. As bosses go Rachael wasn’t that bad but she didn’t know her that well. She had been working for her for around a year now but she still kept her distance from her. To Jody, it seemed the right thing to do who had ever heard of a boss socializing with their employees?

She got on well with Michaela whenever they worked together but she was careful not to say anything bad about Rachael to her. Jody knew that Rachael and Michaela were friends and had been for years. So she chose her words carefully as she didn’t want to lose her job.

Rachael had told her a few months ago that the shop wasn’t doing so well and that she wouldn’t blame Jody if she wanted to find herself a new job. She liked the honesty that Rachael had shown her by telling her that she didn’t need to and for that alone Jody had decided to stick around for a bit longer.

She was a little bit annoyed that she wouldn’t tell her where the woman who was pretending to be a mannequin was hiding, but she thought as a trusted employee she should know. Around half past ten she had concluded that there wasn’t one but she didn’t say that to the customers. She wasn’t lying to them as whenever they asked her to give them a clue she said she couldn’t as even she didn’t know. She remembered seeing that look on the posh woman’s face when she had told her that. Jody had smiled at that but only when the woman had left the shop and couldn’t see her.

“Afternoon Shirley the usual please.” Jody to the woman behind the counter at the cafe.

“Coming right up,” Shirley answered.

“Oh, could you add a tea to that as well? Looks like the boss’s promotion idea is working. We haven’t been this busy in weeks.” Jody told the older woman.

“No worries honey. Anything else?” Shirley asked.

“No thanks.” Came Jody’s reply as she sat down. She knew her order wouldn’t be long Shirley never took that long.
