After thinking about it, Jonnie had some possible solutions.
"I wish," she said, "that my current body's mother were here and would do whatever I said."
Nothing happened, not even the sensation of having to look away. The wish just didn't work.
"Damn it!" yelled the 10 year old girl incongruously. She gritted her teeth and thought again. She couldn't wish for anything involving herself.
"I wish," she repeated, "that Mrs. McMillan were here and would obey any commands given to her."
This time it worked. Jonnie looked away and when she looked back, her (or her body's supposed) mother was standing there. She didn't notice anything was wrong and was about to leave when Jonnie said "Stop."
The woman stopped.
"Okay, now whenever I ask you to make a wish, I order you to take this stone, repeat the exact words of the wish, give the stone back to me, and forget you ever did it."
She remained silent and just stood there.
"Okay, make this wish: I wish that Sarah's wish about Jon never wishing for anything about himself doesn't work, because Jon is not a 'himself' but a 'herself'. Then leave and forget you came here."
Sarah's mother took the stone, repeated the words verbatim, and handed the stone back to Jonnie. Immediately she did an about-face and walked out the door zombie-like, pulling it shut.
Jonnie's first priority was a test. "I wish for a slice of pepperoni pizza on a paper plate." The sight and smell of the newly materialized pizza slice showed Jonnie that it did work, after all. She could start fixing everything else.
First, her age. "I wish that I was 10 years old but five seconds away from being 11." Jonnie noticed no change, but after waiting ten seconds, she said "I wish I was teenage again." Since she was no longer 10 anyway, the wish that she was 10 was not being reversed by becoming teenage.
"I wish I was on the farm where Karyn is." Nothing happened.
"I wish I had the power to read the minds of cows, and was on the nearest farm to here."
Jonnie found herself appear in a field. Fortunately, there was really only one farm in range. It was strange to read the minds of cows, most of which had to do with eating grass and had a depressing sameness to it. But finally she found Karyn.
"Karyn," she said, "it's me, Jon, even though I'm female now. I can't make wishes about you, but you can. I wish that this stone responds to cow noises, spoken by a cow that is trying to speak English, as if the cow really was speaking English.
Jonnie tossed the stone under one of Karyn's hooves. "Now," he said, "I hope you can think of something..."
