A short while ago Lonna had returned to the Rodriguez where Mrs Rodriguez was waiting for her. She was ecstatic that for once when Lonna’s’ teachers had called it was not that her daughter was in trouble. It seemed that was the only time that they called her. Mind you she thought that it was the same for the parents of a high schooler these days it was never like that when she was at school. Who was she trying to kid? She was just glad that her mom and dad couldn’t hear what she was thinking they would probably have a word or two to say about it.
Lonna was red-faced when she handed over the permission slip that Mrs Rodriguez had to sign. Lonna could not remember the last time that she needed to have a permission slip to allow her to do anything. This to her was just another sign of how much of her life she had lost. The authority that just being her had gone it seemed to have gone to Lauren. Was there much left of Lonna Tran that had not gone to the newly minted Lauren Tran?
Lonna was surprised with how well Lauren was taking the change to her ethnicity she was not sure how well she would take something like that happening to her if it did. She hoped it would not get to that point. She sat and had her meal with her Mom before going to get ready for the night ahead. After what had happened with the boys on the coach staring at her and especially her legs, she knew she wanted to get out of the dress that she was currently wearing.
Mrs Rodriguez was upset that Lonna did not want to wear “Something Nice” as she put it. She had no idea why Lonna didn’t like wearing a dress. When she was little she was such a girlie girl, you couldn’t have stopped her from wearing a dress back then but for some reason that had stopped around the time she had turned 10. She had tried asking her but the only answer she got was that she didn’t feel like wearing one that day. So after a while, Mrs Rodriguez stopped asking. It could have been worse she thought. Raising a tomboy was not that bad. Now and again Lonna would wear the odd dress and her Mom thought that she would wear them more often but that was not the case Maybe it was just a phase that she would grow out of. One day.
Lonna left her bedroom a little later wearing a black leather blazer with a gray turtleneck a pair of black jeans, and black boots and was carrying a black handbag. As far as she was concerned this fitted with the instruction to wear something nice. Well it was as close as she could get in Lauren's closet. The thought that had crossed Laurens’ mind earlier that day now crossed Lonna's’ How were they able to fit into each other's clothes? They had been two women of very different sizes on that fateful Monday morning, there was no way that Laurens’ clothes should fit her yet they had all week so far. This was something that she and Lauren could discuss on their trip to the museum tonight she thought just as the doorbell rang.
Lonna looked at her watch at thought that this could only be Lauren. She remembered what had happened when Lauren had called her Mom earlier that afternoon. She hoped that Lauren would be all right talking to the woman who had been her Mom at the start of the week. Time to put her game face on and try to help Lauren, she only hoped that she was good at improvising. Here goes she thought as she went to answer the door.
