Karyn, still frozen and unable to move, watched her little brother leave the kitchen, but heard him talking with her mom in the next room.
"Hi, Kevin. Have you seen Karyn?" she asked her son.
"Yeah, she's in the kitchen."
Karyn braced herself, realizing that soon her mother would enter the kitchen and probably either scream or faint.
