Jon thought. She wasn't sure. Eventually she asked Karyn for help and they tried thinking up a good reason.
But there wasn't a reason that made any sense. How exactly could you explain "Jon turns into a girl when he thinks of telling people about Sarah's powers"? Of course, even just having Sarah use the stone was a reason, of a sort. Jon finally decided that was the best one.
"I wish," said Jon, "that when Sarah changed us today, the 'reason' we changed is that Sarah just used the stone and zapped us with no change in reality. I wish that only me and Karyn know it's a magic stone, but Sarah knows she did something magic she can't remember. I wish that if we tell people about the magic, they'll believe us, but won't want to take revenge on Sarah. There we go."
"You mean I can tell Mom I got pregnant because of Sarah, and she'll believe me? And you can go to school and say 'Hi, I'm Jon, yesterday I was a boy, today I'm a pregnant girl with a baby' and they'll believe you?"
"Right. I just have to be careful not to tell them Sarah did it, or I'll turn female. But you can tell them."
"There's still a problem, Jon. You're six months pregnant, but you're turning into a boy tomorrow morning."
"Yeah, I can see how that's a problem. I wish...."
