"I wish I had a device as I have described on this piece of paper in my hand and I know how to work it"
There was a brief flash of light and a device resembling a Gameboy appeared in Jon's hand.
"You wished for an old Gameboy?" Karyn asked.
"It's not a Gameboy"
"Sure looks like it. I haven't seen one for a long time though."
"Read this." he told her handing her the piece of paper.
Karyn took the paper and read the words on it.
"The Dimensional Time Hopper is a handheld device that can be used to travel to different parallel dimensions. It also allows the user to travel along the parallel timeline to see how different causes caused different outcomes. It has a display which shows major changes in the timeline resulting in significantly different universes. It can only be used by the person who created it but it will allow that person to take others with them on the travels to parallel dimensions. It will also have a fail-safe that allows the user to return to their starting point with anyone they are travelling with. The device cannot be lost. It has an internal, safe and regenerating power supply. It cannot be destroyed except intentionally by it's creator."
"Jon, you are such a nerd, why did you write it all down?" she asked.
"I didn't want to leave too much to chance by thinking and talking at the same time."
"Good idea. Why does it look like a Gameboy?"
"No idea, probably because I didn't really clearly state what it was to look like."
"Can I have a look at it?"
"Sure." he told her. He handed her the device.
Karyn noticed, on closer inspection it was a bit different from a Gameboy. For one thing it had a few more controls. The screen was larger, backlit, in colour and hi-res. Under the screen it had the words 'Dimensional Time Hopper" instead of Gameboy. On the screen there was something looking like a tree with various numbers on each branch.
"What does all this stuff mean?" she asked pointing at the screen.
Jon glanced at it.
"Those are the dimensions branching off from the timeline."
He pushed a few buttons and stared silently at the screen. His expression changed to one of concern.
"What's wrong?"
"There has been a massive number of branches since yesterday when I told you about the stone. After that hardly any till about half an hour ago when I called you and then another pile branched off."
"Should we be worried?"
"I don't think so. I think that's just the way it works."
"Okay..."
Jon extended his hand.
"You need to take my hand." he told her.
"What for?" she asked confused.
"To travel with me."
"Where are we going?"
"To another dimension"
"Right now?"
"Well we've got the device."
"Yeah but you're not going to take me somewhere where it's really weird or dangerous or something?"
"No, not to start with, just a little hop up this timeline."
Karyn thought about it for a few seconds.
"I suppose so."
Karyn put her hand in Jon's and he grasped it tightly.
"Ready?" he asked.
"I guess..." Karyn told him in an unsure manner.
Jon pressed a button on the DTH and they both vanished in a flash.
