Of course Karyn remembering was no accident. Sarah was actually playing 4D chess. Or so Sarah would like to think. Not quite, but she was being deceptive to Jon too. She didn’t tell Jon that after the course of the wish, that Jon and she wouldn’t be the only ones to remember things in both versions, because she wanted Karyn to have the opportunity to confront Jon without Jon being prepared. If all went according to Sarah’s plan, they would be friends for real.
The doorbell to Jon’s house rang throughout the house. It was connected to speakers that were hidden in the walls or something. Jon’s mother Mandy opened the door and said a curt “hi” to the teen girl she had never seen before.
“Is Jon in?”
“Jon?” Mandy said, pleased. “You’re here for Jon?!” Then she yelled upstairs to Jon’s room. “Jon, there’s a girl here for you!”
“It’s not Sarah?” he called back down.
“No!” she yelled, “get down here!” and then more quietly asked the girl “What’s your name?”
“Karyn.”
“She says her name is Karyn!”
“What?!” Jon thought in dread. That Karyn? What’s she doing here?!
He lumbered down the stairs and saw that indeed, it was her. Or the version of her before the wish for long blonde hair and big tits. Apparently she was lucky that the wish was undone because Sarah had wished beforehand that anything wished for during the school day would be only for the duration of the school day.
“So…” Jon said, not sure what it was wise to say.
“I remember,” Karyn said.
“Oh,” Jon said back.
“What’s this about remembering?” Mandy asked. “Why would you expect her not to remember something? You didn’t give this girl a date rape drug did you Jon?!”
“No! Jesus mom…”
“Let’s, continue this conversation in your room,” Karyn suggested.
“I guess not, if she’s willing to trust you enough to be alone with you in your room,” Mandy said. “I’m embarrassing you aren’t I…”
“Yes,” Jon said, while Karyn had to stifle airflow through her nose and mouth and force as hard as she could with her diaphragm to narrowly avoid laughing.
They got into Jon’s room and Jon turned on his dust remover machine to maximum strength to get some white noise.
“What do you remember?” Jon asked.
“Everything, both ways.” Karyn replied.
“Well I don’t even remember that, I just remember it for the school day today, but you remember both versions for your whole life?”
“Oh. No. I didn’t mean, that. No, I don’t actually remember both versions of my whole life, just for today.”
“Well that’s unexpected, but it’s not really a problem then. Here I thought you meant I was upheaving your entire childhood, but it should be easy to just pretend today never happened, if it was just one weird day.”
“Maybe, but then, what about the rock?”
“What about it? Forget all about it. Today never happened.”
“I’m not going to forget something like that. I’m part of this thing now, you can’t leave me out of it now.”
“Watch me. In any case, it’s not mine, it’s Sarah’s. She made the wish too, not me. I don’t know the exact wording of it, she made it, then loaned me the stone, and then at the end of the day I gave it back to her.”
“We, we have to get it back from her!” Karyn said with some desperation.
“Why?”
“We can’t leave it with her, there’s no telling what she’ll do with it!”
“I trust it with her way more than with you,” Jon said venomously. “She’s a good person, much better than you.”
Karyn grumbled at that.
“What did you expect?” Jon asked.
“So you’re just like all the others after all, I knew it.”
“Oh you just wanted to ironically prove me right did you? Gonna prove me right even more now?”
“You’re all the same, you just worship the ground beneath her feet because of her boobs!”
“Oh would you look at that! You think I’m the simple one, but if I could predict the lottery as well as I just predicted you, the state would go bankrupt! She’s my cousin and my actual friend Karyn. What are you to me? And you certainly looked down on me like some sort of bug before today, what kind of loyalty do you think I owe you, why would you think you could compete with her for my loyalty, why would you ever think I would have any sort of loyalty to you at all? You’re just a nasty lesbian girl-power tomboy girl that hates all guys, if you had the stone, you’d probably wish me and every other human male on planet Earth into the sun! You’re damn right I’m not going to help you get it away from Sarah! And by the way, she only set up our one day of friendship because she was trying to help you you ungrateful lunatic bitch. And you have absolutely no reason to hold a grudge against her either, if any boy ever had a crush on you, I wonder what you would have done, if you would have been as gentle with him as Sarah was with you or if you would have humiliated him instead?”
Karyn’s upper lip quivered. “Whatever,” she said. “I guess this was a waste of time.”
“Don’t let the door hit you on the way out,” Jon said as she left his room.
That’s a good idea you gave me though, Karyn thought as she was leaving the house. Teleporting every human male into the sun. Except that it had a range of only a few miles. And she really wanted them to suffer more than that anyway. No quick death for them. Well she could get them all with a deadly disease that attacked the human Y chromosome maybe, then even if it started in the range of the rock, it would soon spread all over the world. She guessed a few on the international space station and other extremely isolated locations might survive, but she could pick them off one by one later. She just needed to get the rock from Sarah so that she could make some wishes.
I hope they become good friends, just like in that fictional version of reality, Sarah was thinking to herself at that very moment.
