While I didn't want Karyn to be trapped here as well, I did want her to know what had happened to me. I could have wished the knowledge in her head, but I preferred to tell her in my own words. It was becoming obvious anyway that the book was simply too large to be of any real use to me as it was. "I wish this book would become a state-of-the-art laptop computer," I wished.
I blinked, and the book was instantly replaced with the latest model of a leading computer company. Opening it, I wished that an email application was installed. I accessed it and began typing an email:
Karyn,
This is Jon. When I vanished the weeds, I was sent to the Land of Things that Disappear with them. It's this alien planet a long way from Earth. I wish I could see you again, but I can't. This place is like the Bermuda Triangle. No escape.
I'm sorry, Karyn. I hope that you won't forget about me.
Jon
I read the letter out loud twice, but I still couldn't make it sound right. Sighing, I made a wish for this email to be sent to her account despite the lack of Internet connection. Little did I know, I had just made it possible for Karyn to find me.
Unknowing what I had just accidentally done, I opened the eBook containing the information about the Land of Things that Disappear. If I had been sent here, it made sense that other people had too. Taking advantage of the electronic format, I jumped quickly to a large directory of all the people stranded here.
I cringed thinking about what it must have been like for these people. After all, I had the rock. They, on the other had, had to make do with whatever few items were brought with them. "I wish I knew which one I'd want to help out the most," I said. My hand moved with a will of its own and brought up a page with an image of an attractive teenage girl wearing only a sequined bikini.
"Danielle Goodman," I read. "Sent here by accident during an amateur magic show in Houston yesterday. In danger of being eaten by the Barghest, which will catch her scent in the next hour." I clicked the 'Barghest' link, and learned that it was a monstrous black dog that ate lone travelers.
I went back to the previous page and, leering at the photo, made up my mind to save this girl from the dog. Hopefully she would be so grateful, she'd... I spent some time playing out the fantasy sequence in my head.
