"You mean I'm -- Karyn and I are --?" The stone said nothing. Jon cursed, then finished the thought as a wish.
Yes, the stone told him. Both of them were newly pregnant. It had been a productive night. Jon wrung more answers from the stone: he and Karyn, obviously he more than she, were gradually changing to accommodate a healthy litter each. The whole process was temporary but could take quite a while.. unless he wished the problem away. Jon pretended to throttle the stone for making his life so, so... absurd! Then he plopped down at the cabin table, buried his head in his hands, and against his better judgment began to laugh.
"I wish I knew where Karyn was." Jon's gaze gravitated toward the door to the head, just as it opened. Karyn wobbled a bit, then steadied herself and said, "I felt sick, but I'm all right. What's so funny?"
Jon started to speak, then paused. They could wish everything in the direction they wanted, so maybe it didn't matter. But then, if this business didn't matter, what did? He looked out into the red twilight and saw the twin moons coming up full. "Tonight, let's..."
