Years of working had taught John that if you wanted to get the right kind of people interested in an area, you had to use the right kind of product. John and his partner Stewart wanted the Rusted Boat Corner to be a beacon for the eventual redevelopment of the area, with the two of them at the top.
It took months of hard work and some loans, but eventually the Rusted Boat Corner opened. The foyer and ground floor were a grassroots gallery space and venue for local bands to play. If one walked in front of the building they could see straight to the very back, where one would see a small plank dock stretching onto the lake. Inside, the gallery seems to move to the first floor, turning into a cafe that came out onto a balcony looking over the small dock. The third and fourth floors were studios and spaces that John and Stewart ran as educational and creative enterprises: artists were invited to set-up their studios, and people from all over were invited to give classes on anything they wanted to.
And, on the rooftop, there was a small rooftop garden, and a small apartment that John and Stewart called home.
