Marybeth sat staring at nothing in particular. She was waiting for the Mall to open, for her first day as an employee and manager of the store to start. She had not seen John nor his goons since her interview the day before.
Now she just sat, feeling her new life.
Marybeth remembered Cass, the person she had been, and didn't like what she rememebered. Cass had been rebelious, had been a punk rocker, had been creative. Those were not qualities for a good employee. She had to be loyal, obedient, and follow the rules. She was dressed as an employee: nylon perfectly fused to her skin, pencil skirt permanently added to her waist, tight blouse irrevocably attached to her torso. She was what she wore.
Marybeth smiled, to no one in particular. That was what she did, smile. Marybeth liked to smile, she was a saleswoman, after all. She had to smile. She hadt to obey. She had to sell.
Suddenly she stood, without warning. She walked towards the front door, unlocked it, and turned on the lights inside. She went back to her chair behind the counter and sat, waiting, becoming more Marybeth.
She had to wait until someone entered.
In the mean time she became more obedient.
Marybeth starts feeling like Marybeth
