Jonatha stopped at home to collect a few clothes and things before walking over to Buffie’s. As he walked up the drive, he noticed a car on the driveway. It was a big, shiny, black, SUV. The licence plate read L1N. After a few moments, Jonatha put two and two together and figured that the car must belong to his mom.

He paused at that—up until now, Jonatha hadn’t met his mom. She seemed to work late all the time and he hadn’t worked out what she did in this wished-up world yet. Jonatha had already worked out that, like in his world, their father was out of the picture, which made him a little sad.

He would have liked to have met this version of his father. Jonatha sniffed, surprised that he was upset by it this much, and headed inside.

“I’m home!” he called out, and sure enough, his mom was home.

“I’m in the office, sweetheart!” he heard her call out.

The office? Jonatha thought. Although he had been home several times this week since the wish, he hadn’t explored his house yet. They certainly didn’t have an office before the wish.

Jonatha tried to follow the sound of his mother’s voice and eventually came to the office. It was well furnished: wooden plastered walls, a few bookcases lining one side of the room, and a large oak desk in the middle. Sitting at the desk, looking at a computer, was his mother.

“Hi, mom.” Jonatha said as he knocked on the door. “You’re home early," he commented.

Lin looked up and nodded. “Yeah, honey, I had a meeting with a client nearby, so I decided that I’d come home afterwards instead of heading back to the office.” Jonatha nodded in understanding.

“So what have you been up to?” Lin asked. “Shopping, I assume?” she said, taking in the armful of bags that Jonatha was carrying.

“Umm, yeah,” Jonatha said, blushing a little.

“That’s a lot of bags, sweetie,” Lin noted with a hint of worry in her voice as she leaned back in her leather chair.

“I know,” Jonatha replied. “But I actually have a date with a girl from school on Friday and I needed a new outfit," he explained.

Lin smiled but raised her eyebrows.

“That’s a lot of stuff for one date,” she commented with a little chuckle. She got up and walked over to Jonatha, placing her hands on his shoulders.

“Darling,” she said with a small sigh. “It’s great that you’ve got a date, but you just have to remember, money doesn’t grow on trees. Just…watch what you spend, OK?”

Jonatha sighed with a hint of irritation.

“Alright,” he said. “I’m heading over to Buffie’s. I just came home to pick up some clothes. We’re having a sleepover.”

“Oh, OK then. Have fun, sweetheart.”

Jon headed upstairs to his room and dropped the shopping bag off and pick up the things that he would need. He packed into a bag a purple silk nightie and some toiletries. Jonatha noted that purple was indeed now his color. After checking that he had everything, Jonatha headed downstairs, saying goodbye to his mom, and then walked over to Buffie’s.

On the way, he saw a dark figure walking in the other direction. Jonatha, a little worried since he was walking alone at night, considered running, but the figure did not seem that menacing. In fact, part of him had the exact opposite reaction, although he wasn't sure why. As they got close enough to see each other more clearly, Jonatha paused. "Don't I know you from somewhere?" he said, faking just not recognizing the other teenager. But, internally, there was something familiar about this girl.
