After walking into the room, Melissa looked straight at Jon, or at least in his direction, but she didn't seem to notice that he was there. Was he invisible to her? He moved over to her, thinking that the creaking of the floor might give him away, but she still didn't register the fact that he was there. He watched her sit down on her bed and grab her cellphone. Then she began texting, probably to one of her friends.

He had to try to get her attention, to see if he really was undetectable. "Melissa," he spoke. She paused from her texting for a moment, then continued. Okay, that might have been because of Jon, or not. He wasn't sure. If she heard him say her name, wouldn't she ask "who's there?" or something?

Okay, another test. He reached forward and ran his fingers across one of her bare arms. He thought that his hand might go through her, like a ghost. But it didn't. He could feel her smooth perfect skin beneath his fingertips. But again, she didn't seem to notice his presence.

So he tried something else. He grabbed the phone out of her hands and tossed it to the side, on the bed. She seemed a bit perplexed for a moment, but then shrugged her shoulders, got off the bed, and began doing something else. Maybe she thought that she had been the one to toss her phone aside?

He looked around and found a stack of school books on her desk. He wondered how often she used that desk. Jon grabbed the math book and shoved it into her hands. Whatever she was doing at the moment seemed to be forgotten. She took the book to her bed, opened it, then began to do her math homework.

Jon wasn't sure exactly, but he thought that he had some kind of control over Melissa's actions. He got rid of her phone, making her want to stop using it, then gave her a math book, making her want to do her math homework. This was amazing. He wondered what else he could "make her do"?
