About ten minutes later, Gary and Lorraine's car drove up their driveway.
They got out and entered the house.
"I don't know if I can get used to this that quickly. It might be strange for her that I don't know her."
"Gary, don't worry. It'll all come back. I'm sure of it." They both walked towards the stairs. "Beverly, we're back!" Lorraine yelled. "Could you come down here? We want to tell you something."
"Wait. Tell me something about her. Anything. How is she in school? What's her favorite music? Is she into any sports?"
"Well, she's part of the high school cheerleading squad."
Gary collapsed in a chair. "Cheerleading?"
Beverly walked down the stairs and into the living room. "Like, what is it? I was on the phone with Roni."
Gary looked up suddenly. "Ronny?"
"Yeah, dad. She's part of the cheerleading team. We were, like, wanting to go out and shop tonight. If that's, like, okay with you, I mean."
"Sure Beverly, but first I want to tell you about ..."
"Muh-omm! I told you I like to be called Buffy."
"Buffy?"
"Dad, not you too."
But it swirled around in his mind. Biff, Buffy. Ronald, Roni. Was it just him that was different? Or was it everyone else?
"Buffy?"
"Yeah, dad?"
"Did anything unusual happen while I was gone? Anything out of the ordinary?"
"Well, Sarah got sick really bad and was in the hospital."
"Sarah?"
"Yeah. Sarah McMillan. She's, like, the head of the cheerleaders. She got really sick. She wanted us to go out and find that Jon guy. I guess he made her sick. She told us to tell him never do it again. That Jon is kinda cute."
"Who is this Jon?"
"Jon Smith."
"Sounds made up."
"No, that's his name. He hangs out with that Karyn girl. Anyway, we told him and then came back here. Sarah's okay now. She's not, like, sick anymore."
"That's good ... Buffy." Hmm, Gary thought to himself. Jon Smith. Maybe he should meet this Jon. For some reason, Gary had this strange nagging feeling that Jon was responsible for this situation.
"I'm gonna go for a walk to clear my head."
"But, Gary, what about the talk we're going to have with Beverly?"
"I won't be too long, just around the block." Gary went outside and closed the door behind him.
