After over an hour of searching, Jon and Karyn were forced to give up.
"I don't think we're going to find it," Karyn said worriedly. "You lost your memories. I think someone else has the stone."
"Someone else?" Jon gulped. "Sounds bad."
"Yeah," she agreed. "That's putting it mildly. Look, can you think of anyone else you would have told about the stone?"
"I don't remember!" he said, holding out his hands in helplessness.
"Just think," she insisted. "If you had a magic stone, you would tell...?"
"I don't know!" he cried. "You, I guess. I mean, you're my best friend, so... I don't know, just you?"
Karyn sighed. "Okay, you don't know. Maybe whoever has it wished you couldn't know... I guess we'll just have to be on the lookout for things people have that they might have wished for. We should make a list..."
"Sarah disappeared," he pointed out. "A lot of people would wish for that."
"Hey, you're right!" Karyn exclaimed. "We should interrogate the people she picks on the most. One of them might have the stone."
"No, we should infiltrate them," Jon said. "If we come at them head-on, they might just wish something bad happens to us..."
"God, you're right," she realized. "No, wait, you can't. They know you had the stone. If you do anything, it'll look suspicious. I have to go alone."
"Be careful," he said. "If something bad happens to you... I couldn't..."
She offered him a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, I'll be careful." Without warning, she leaned forward and kissed his cheek.
Jon could only stare.
Karyn chuckled nervously. "I... I don't know why I did that."
"It's fine!" he was quick to say. "I mean, whatever. It's good!" He smiled. This was Karyn, his best friend, and he always had found her attractive. He hadn't wanted to make his move for fear of rejection, but now that she acted first everything was great.
Everything was great.
And yet...
Everything was wrong.
