That first period history class was very different.
Mrs. Gray, the history teacher she had once had, had been replaced by a new teacher, Ms. Lake. Lake was younger, wore her hair in an afro and sported a vibrant cloth dress in African patterns. Maps of Africa dominated the walls, as did portraits of female rulers she did not recognize. There was not a single white face to be had.
