One year ago.
It was a blur of motion. Karyn Black was running down the soccer field. The wind blew through her short red hair. Julie Decker was beside her. In a blur the ball passed back and forth between them. They were Black and Decker, the Power Tools, together they were unbeatable. As they Neared the goal Karyn gave the ball a flying kick, it zoomed past the goalies head. Point scored and the final goal of the game one. Lake Point High wins.
Julie run over and hugged Karyn and gave her a high five.
"Hey Karyn, the power tools did it again. Alone we are strong, but together on the field we are unbeatable. Want to head out to The Waffle Cone for a victory ice cream? Janet and Susie are going."
"I don't know, I was thinking of visiting an old friend I haven't hung with for a while." Karyn said.
"oh who?" Julie said ethusiasticly.
"Just a boy." Karyn said.
"Another prep boy I hope. You were such a lovely couple when you and Bill were together. He was class president and everything. So much better than the jocks you drool over. You know you'd never be able to have them. If you tried Sarah and her clique would eat you alive."
"Not a boyfriend, just a friend." Karyn replied. "Jon has been my neighbor since I was a kid. I used to hang with him all the time. I have sort of ignored him the couple years. Just my life drifted in a different direction, and now I feel guilty for it."
"JON!", Julie said. "That guy who follows you around like a sick puppy. He's watching you from the bleachers. He's almost like a stalker."
"it was game everyone is watching me. Besides Jon is harmless. He has a crush but I feel it could pass. Besides we hung out alot in the past and who knows, maybe he IS the guy for me. I doubt it, but who knows where hanging with an old friend will go."
"You DON'T want to hang with Jon", Julie said. "He is a nobody, he doesn't even have a clique. Just a few loose friends he mostly ignores. He's a loser. If you hang with him he'd bring us down and turn everyone against you. you'd be a loser too. You don't want to bring us down to HIS level do you. You know who your friends are."
Karyn didn't go to eat ice cream with Julie and the others, instead she went directly to Coach Kimberly Thompson.
"Are you sure you want to quit the team?" The coach said. "We rely on you for victory, we always have. You leaving would be a serious blow to the team."
"I am sure". Karyn said.
"and what is your reason for quitting"? The coach asked.
"Well..." Karyn said with a smile. "Lets just say I know who my friends are."
