The guy next to Karen had dark skin and short cropped curly hair, and just looked familiar to Jon. He stared and tried to place where he had seen him before, but the guys name kept falling through his fingers.
"Hey, Tights." The counter girl said, breaking Jon out of his contemplation. "I got your ice cream ready. Just need your money. It's 6.74."
"Oh. Sorry." Jon dug into his messenger bag for his wallet. And as he did, a crazy, unbelievable plan formed in his mind. He decided to do something he had never done. It probably wouldn't work, but it was worth a shot. Maybe the wishing stone really had increased his confidence.
Jon looked at Ellie and her cute black glasses, and asked, "Do you want to hang out sometime?"
She quirked her eyebrow and looked at Jon for what might have been the longest second of his life.
"Yeah. By some divine intervention, I'm off Friday."
Jon tried very very hard not to look too surprised.
"Friday it is." Ellie smiled and wrote down a number on a napkin.
"Just one thing. You gotta wear those cute tights."
"Deal."
Ellie handed the napkin over, and the ice cream a moment after that, "See you Friday, Tights."
Jon stood by the counter, still aglow and amazed at what had just happened. He got a date with a cute girl. No stone. No wishing. Just action. He walked away from the counter with a smile on his face.
He turned and saw Karyn with the other gut, and it suddenly hit Jon who he was.
