"Really?" replied Karyn after he explained. "I don't get it."
"I told you everything. You're the only one I can trust. Nobody else likes me and everyone else would use the stone against me. Even family."
"That's the part I don't get," said Karyn. "Your grandfather at one point was alive and had the stone. He didn't use it against you, right?"
"Well... yeah."
"So it isn't true that everyone who gets the stone would use the stone against you. I mean, I know he was dead at the time, so your wish wouldn't have picked him up anyway, but it still shows that there's more than one good person in the world. If I can exist and your grandfather can also exist surely there have to be others."
"Uhh... I suppose," said Jon. "But the stone didn't find any. Maybe instead of one person there's two. That doesn't help much."
"Here's my suggestion," explained Karyn. "First of all, it isn't long until college. You'll get out of this small town, and you'll get to know a lot of people. They could be good people and friends--they're just out of the stone's range right now."
"But that's a while off," said Jon. "Unless I wish myself into college."
"Wait," she replied. "That was one idea, but I had another one. Just change yourself."
"What?"
"Change yourself. Make a wish for it. You probably don't even to change your mind or personality. Just changing some superficial things might make people more willing to be friends. You wished to know who would be good to you, but you didn't ask who would be good to you under different circumstances, did you?So change the circumstances."
