"I'm glad," said Nadine.

"Just ignore Sarah," said Julie. "She's a bitch."

Nadine frowned.

"Wait a minute, what did I say?" said Julie. "You know that Sarah-- oh. Right. Sorry. You're going to lecture me about being polite or something?"

"No! If I went around correcting everyone who used profanity I'd be doing nothing else. And everyone would have a reason to hate me. I'm not stupid, Julie. I know that "love they neighbor" isn't very popular. Tell me, Julie, is there something you know is wrong? And do you try to stop it every chance you get when you know people won't listen to you?"

"I thought profanity was just using God's name in vain. Calling someone a bitch isn't using God's name."

"You know what I meant," replied Nadine. "But it doesn't matter," she said sadly. "There's nothing I can do. People using profanity, people getting trapped in the occult, people doing all sorts of immoral things. Your own sister is into spells. She could be going straight to Hell...."

"Don't be silly," said Julie. "It's harmless. There's no such thing as real magic. You can't really cast spells." She wasn't able to sound very convincing, because she knew otherwise. A week ago, Nadine believing in magic would have seemed completely disconnected from reality. But now, when Nadine said magic exists, that meant she knew about something real that nobody else knows about. She was wrong about what magic is like, but she wasn't crazy just for thinking that there is real magical power and that it could be dangerous.

"You don't really believe that," said Nadine. "I can tell."

"Of course I do," said Julie. She tried to sound more convincing. At least she seemed to be convincing Nadine that she ''is'' Julie, although nothing Julie-specific had really come up.

Later in the day Julie was approached by Nicole, a brunette cheerleader. "I'm impressed," said Nicole. "You lasted the entire lunch period with Nadine."

"She's not so bad when you talk to her," said Julie.

"Are you kidding?" replied Nicole. She eyed Julie's face and finally decided. "You're not kidding. Oh, fine, you can talk to whoever you want.

"I... I was just thinking about some things over vacation," said Julie. Nicole was supposed to be her friend, according to that diary. Talking to a supposed friend was worse than someone like Nadine--it was a lot easier to mess up. "I also made up with Karyn after I get back."

"Did you get lectured by your grandparents or something? Be nice to people?"

"Forget it, Nicole," said Julia. "But you know I did have some strange things happen. Nothing to do with anyone telling me to be nice to people. But my grandfather did die."

"Oh, that's sad. You're forgiven for acting weird."

"Also my Facebook page got wiped. They just completely lost it. I don't understand how it could happen."

"Really? Wow, your vacation really did suck...."
