Dr. Pondstock closely examined one of the still-unconscious subjects, then looked back up at the Colonel. "And you say that only half of the students have awoken?"
"Yes, that's right," the Colonel said, walking beside the doctor as he went from one subject to the next.
"And all of the ones who woke up ... they were all restless?"
"Well, not all of them. Just most of them. We decided to restrain them all, just to be sure."
"Show me one of them that didn't struggle," the doctor said.
The Colonel nodded, then walked to the other side of the gymnasium. "This one didn't struggle at all. But she did seem a bit bewildered."
"Understandable." He bent over her body and looked closely at her. "She's still asleep."
"We tranqued her."
"Then please wake her up. The best way to figure out what's happening is by getting a statement from one of the subjects."
The Colonel nodded, then waved over one of his men. The soldier then awoke the girl.
"Can you hear me?" the doctor asked her.
For a moment, there was no response. But after the doctor repeated his question two more times, the girl began to stir.
She opened her eyes and frantically looked all around her. "What ... what's happening?" she asked, her voice a bit hoarse.
"Do you remember who you are?" the doctor asked.
"Yes. I think so. My name is Jon Gibson."
The doctor and the Colonel gave each other confused and uneasy looks.
"What? What's wrong?" the girl asked.
"According to your ID, your name is ..." Dr. Pondstock began.
